How to Lower Gun Violence

This morning I was reading a blog entry on Glenn Beck's The Blaze when I ran across this blogger's words..  I thought it was rather interesting.  Here is the post:

Want to see a liberals go speechless on gun control? Ask these questions.
Do you know that blacks make up 12.5% of the population, but do ½ of the nation’s murders?
Do you know that by lowering black murder rates to the same as whites, we would lower the national murder per capita rate by 40%, we would also have a murder rate as low as the lowest nations in Europe, and we would save thousands of black lives?
Would you like to save black lives? What do you suggest we do to lower black murder rates?
Do you know that 70% of our murders in the US are gang related? Other than having his DOJ give “assault weapons” to Mexican drug gangs, what is Obama doing to combat gang violence?
Do you know that that our violent crimes are intrinsically tied to liberal welfare programs? Do you suggest we start phasing out these programs, being they have not succeeded in lowing poverty rates, but have instead raised it.
Do you realize that for three decades, MTV has continuously portrayed the black man as a thuggish brute that has bitches and hoes, walks around adorned in gaudy gold jewelry, wearing clownish clothes three times to big, is a gangster, and has contributed to blacks glorifying a criminal lifestyle?
libs will not be able to answer my questions above, nor will they even want to admit to the truth of those statistics
Criminality is not genetic, nor has it ever been.
Skin color is benign and non-behavioral. People do not commit crimes because of the color of thier skin.
What we do know, is that democrat programs, welfare, multicultural education, MTV, violent rap….. have all contributed to a serious problem of violence and murder within the black communities in the US.
Because of the liberal mandated laws of political correctness, no one is supposed to speak of these facts, nor do liberals want anyone to try to solve these problems. It detracts from their agenda
Notice that over 500 people (mostly black) were murdered in Chicago, this year alone. The mass majority were killed via cheap or stolen hand guns. Less that 3% were killed with a rifle of any type, but Obama and the libs are clamoring for banning rifles. What does that tell us? It would seem to me that libs believe that rich white kids from Connecticut matter, but blacks from the South Side of Chicago do not, otherwise, Obama and crowd would be talking lowering murder rates, and not outlawing the least used weapon in crimes.
Contrary to popular belief, most AR owners, use them for sport. we shoot national match at Camp Perry, do 3-gun, Varmint shoots, and NRA high-power matches. They are to expensive for criminals.

  1. Excellent assessment by the commenter above. I am born, bred and raised in NYC. Grew up in high crime communities and can tell you that the gun violence is as they say in the hood "off the chain."

For the past decade, when someone related to one “politically connected” in the community is murdered due to gun violence, so-called Black community leaders hold a prayer/protest in which the community participates. Afterwards, everyone immediately return to their respective corners.

I often ask myself while observing these faux displays on the nightly news, how many gun carrying thugs are there lurking within the crowd.

Always, these self-anointed community leaders demand money in the name of the community and/or the deceased and his or her family stating that it is intended to combat gun violence and get the kids off the streets. This is nothing more than yet another prime example of greedy Progressives taking advantage of a good crisis.

In fact, there is always the demand for money and once obtained, only a scrap reaches its designation while everything remains the same.

Everyday Progressives claim that it is all about the children it is really all about greed and self-enrichment.

  3. Great post Jon!!! I wish someone would address this at the Congressional level ... but that'll never happen! Until then ... I can only pray that our Constitution stays in ONE PIECE!

  4. Where did you get the statistics about the number of murders committed by blacks?

    1. I don't know where he got his statistics, but it's easy to access them with a little perseverance. Check the FBI web site, census information, and Center for Disease Control for starters. I very much believe in people reading the numbers for themselves. Some of those sites allow downloading in spreadsheet format so you can create your own tables and charts.

  5. Hi Jon, Great post! Per chance, do you have the location of those stats on hand? I'm gathering as much research as possible. With these "executive actions" to do more research, I want cold/hard facts to counteract their twisted-politically driven BS that they will come up with.

    Cheers!

  6. There are a lot of sites online if you Google "Black Crime Statistics." The commentator from the Blaze that I quoted stated some numbers that I have heard before too. You shouldn't have any trouble finding them.

  7. All true. As an EMT, firefighter, and (later) a police dispatcher, I know these all to be true. Unfortunately the minute you start spouting these facts, you are dismissed as a racist.

  9. A perspective I agree with. It saddens me that some of our National issues would be solved if there was not political agendas on each side. The other part that saddens me is that I am a puppet to someone else's desires, greed and hate. I have always said that this Earth has enough for every man's need but not for every man's greed. I wish people would wake up. But sadly this will not be the case. I guess the bottom has to fall out before real peace and change can come.

  10. I live in Ohio and 1/2 of the prisoners in Ohio are from one of our 88 counties (Cuyahoga County), which is a county with a majority of Blacks, so I am not surprised by these stats. Our families with responsible parents raising responsible children is gone. People have NO respect for others today. I grew up with guns (Grandpa kept his shotgun on the porch or in his truck, my father owned guns as did all of my 5 uncles, my husband owned several and my 3 children never touched them, as they respected our rules, and we still have guns). ALL OF THESE GUNS NEVER KILLED ANYONE, but we had/have them for protection. Our biggest problem with guns getting into the wrong hands is OUR GOVERNMENT (our judicial system slaps them on the hand and they go out and do the crime all over again). Why be AFRAID not to commit a crime in our society? What do have they to be afraid of? We give them a trial, a jury, a judge, a defense attorney ... and why ... oh, it's 'to see if they are guilty' or not???????????? Why do we do this? I don't understand why the red-headed murderer in Aurora is fed, clothed, kept warm, given a bed AND 'ALLOWED' to be tried TO SEE IF HE WAS GUILTY??????? MY GOD, HE IS GUILTY!!! Is there a FREAKIN chance he is not guilty? He even wore a bullet proof vest. He wanted to kill and yet live for his FREEBIE society to take care of him??? Change the rules, let more law-abiding citizens take the law into their own hands, stop them in their tracks, give jobs to our former military, who are looking for work, in the schools and in public places to stop this crap and protect the peoople!

  11. Excellent post! Thank you for putting these statistics together. I totally agree with everyone's comments, not much to add.... but like Glenn Beck has said we need another George Washington!

  12. PART 1

Ok. It is interesting how taking statistics and then drawing biased conclusions, is so easily accepted.

For those interested in the stats, go here: http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/homicide/race.cfm

Most of the statistics are accurate except gang related homicides (20%, not 70%). The total number of gang homicides reported by respondents in the NYGS sample averaged nearly 2,000 annually from 2006 to 2010. During the same time period, the FBI estimated, on average, more than 16,000 homicides across the United States (www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10tbl01.xls). These estimates suggest that gang-related homicides typically accounted for around 12 percent of all homicides annually. See http://www.nationalgangcenter.gov/Survey-Analysis/Measuring-the-Extent-of-Gang-Problems.

So let's address the remarks this blogger has made, and which everyone accepts without question (including Jon).

First, what is Obama doing to combat gang violence? Gangs exist primarily in our large cities, with Chicago and LA having the largest number of gangs. In fact, 20% of all gang violence occurs in these two cities. Like other crimes in our cities and suburbs, they are the purvue of local law enforcement (or state law enforcement). The FBI gets involved in specific crime that involves interstate activity, kidnapping, etc..

In general, the DOJ acts to ensure that laws passed by the legislative branch are properly upheld, while also considering the judicial reviews of the Supreme Court and other aspects of federal law. It works to deal with crimes at a federal level of government, often dealing with those involving multiple states or acts of violence against the nation as a whole. Gang related criminal activity does not fall within the DOJ's purvue.

Does this mean that the Federal government does not contribute money to the states for police, teaching, and firefighting jobs? Despite the fact that Romney did not know this, the Federal government spent $11.6 billion in 2012. See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/12/mitt-romney-federal-spending-police-teachers-firefighters_n_1590872.html

Second, are violent crimes intrinsically tied to liberal welfare programs? First, I would love to say that welfare was a liberal program, but history tells us otherwise; however, liberals tend to be champions of programs to help the poor, elderly, disabled, and mentally disturbed. See http://www.welfareinfo.org/history/

Second, welfare of course does NOT contribute to crime. There's no support for this, and it does not logically make sense. The only connection with Welfare and crime is the theft of welfare checks, and this is reduced by evenly distributing the checks throughout the month (or thru direct deposits). See http://www.people.hbs.edu/ffoley/Crime.pdf

The one clear connection with crime is the high correlation with poverty. If you are poor with little opportunity to break out of poverty, you are more likely to commit a crime. Welfare provides an opportunity to breakout of poverty thru work incentive programs, as well as enabling families to feed, cloth, and shelter themselves (hence, less incentive to commit theft).

  13. PART 2

Third, Clinton implemented the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (including work incentive programs under TANF which limits aid to a finite period). As a result, enrollment in welfare programs dropped nearly 60% during that period.

However, due to the severe recession, under Obama the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 relaxed (did not eliminate) the work incentive requirement as part of the effort to stimulate the economy, and this increased the rolls dramatically.

Should we eliminate these programs? Well, if we did we would likely have a dramatic increase in the homeless and crime; not to mention the negative impact on our economy (I could discuss this in detail, if you wish).

And fourth. The final conclusion of the blogger is: "What we do know, is that democrat programs, welfare, multicultural education, MTV, violent rap….. have all contributed to a serious problem of violence and murder within the black communities in the US."

There is no support for this, of course. I'm sure that the blogger believes this (as do many on this site), but there is no factual foundation for it; and some foundation that it is not true.

We can always look to other nations that have implemented national gun control laws (some far more restrictive than what Obama is proposing), and see that gun crime dramatically declined. And this occured despite that nothing was done to remove violent movies, records, video games etc. from their society. In Japan their movies and videos are far more violent than in the U.S., yet their gun violence was down to two in 2006. See http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2012/07/a-land-without-guns-how-japan-has-virtually-eliminated-shooting-deaths/260189/

In fact, a recent study seems to indicate that violent movies actually decrease violence. See http://elsa.berkeley.edu/~sdellavi/wp/moviescrime08-08-01Forthc.pdf

In conclusion, what we see today is simply distortions and lies to vilify one group by another. Today, it's policital affiliations; in the past it was race, culture, and religion.

How did Nazi Germany convince its populace to support its tyrannical regime (besides eliminating its depression)? By vilifying Jews and other groups that did not fit its Arian definition. It's always someone or some group that's at fault; never our own.

  14. Yes, it is up to each of us to not misuse the right to own firearms. It is fundamentally correct to allow citizens to protect themselves with guns. It is a right given to all through the constitution. So, it is people that need to be taught and controlled, not guns. Hitler also mandated the confiscation of citizens' guns. No gun, no power to protect yourself and your freedoms. People that commit crimes with guns should be punished to the extent of the law and have that right revoked because seemingly, they can't be trusted with the responsibility to own and carry weapons.

  15. enielson, I agree. The saying "Guns don't kill; people do" is often misinterpreted. A gun is a tool (a weapon), and when in the wrong hands (criminal, mentally ill, gun trafficker, etc.) it can wreak havoc.

As with many of our constitutional rights, they have restrictions. Gun control laws are restrictions to our 2nd Amendment right.

I have stated previously that imo we should license the use of guns (as some states currently do) nationally. Some of the requirements to getting a license would be the competent handling of the weapon, including safe storage in a lock box so no one else has access. If the use and care of a gun is abused, the license is revoked.

And like a driver's license, it should be renewed periodically.

Just my thoughts on the issue.
